Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, was an English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of Britain's North American colonies.
Teach is most infamous for capturing a French slave ship known as La Concorde, renamed her Queen Anne's Revenge, equipped her with 40 guns, and crewed her with over 300 men.
He became a renowned pirate, his nickname derived from his thick black beard and fearsome appearance; he was reported to have tied lit fuses (slow matches) under his hat and into his beard to intimidate his enemies during battle, giving the impression that he was surrounded by a halo of smoke and flames.
One quote that is attributed to Teach:
"Damn you, you are a sneaking puppy and so are all those who will submit to be governed by laws which rich men have made for their own security."
