Game Mechanics
"In Development"
What follows is a high level summary of our current thinking as it relates to the game mechanics which are subject to a number of dependancies for example like the decision as to what elements will be on-chain with Cardano and what elements may be on-chain on a Cardano side chain and what elements will be off-chain.
SUMMARY
Details to be confirmed on the game mechanics related to the interaction between the various NFTs as holders select their (1) Pirates, (2) Ship, (3) Voyage and (4) Artefact as supplemented by a (5) Kraken Talisman and (6) Family Crests.
NFTs combined to undertake a voyage resulting in discovery of treasure and various artefacts.
We envisage the first version of the game play to be a web-based, idle style game, where a player will combine their NFTs using strategic intent for the best outcome of a voyage.
The focus at first will be on building a balanced, equitable and sustainable economy.
In order to participate in any of the activities in the project from here on out, a person would need to hold at least a Pirate NFT, a Family Crest and a Ship NFT.
ENTRY LEVEL
It is envisage that while all of the genesis game assets referred to in the NFT section will have unique properties standing within in the project and game, there will be entry level assets that may be acquired through the Black Market of Tortuga for new participants to the Project at a nominal value to lower barriers to entry and adoption and foster a Play-to-Own model.
The entry level game assets will never evolve to the same level as the genesis game assets.
PIRATE NFTS
The Pirate NFT will be the main NFT of the collection.
Each Pirate will come with a Rank (Lord, Captain, QM, FM etc) which will give certain attributes aligned with rank and then also 3 core attributes which will be a number between X and Y skill points and will be the following:
Resilience — helps to reduce the risk of your ship suffering damage on a voyage
Fortune — increases your luck and chances at treasure discovery
Navigation — increases your chance to overcome navigational challenges
VOYAGES
Difficulty (Easy to Legendary)
Duration (24 hours to 96 hours)
Number of treasure chests
Number of enemies /events
SHIP NFTS
The Ship NFT will be the second most important part of the collection.
Each participant in the project can own multiple ships and will have to combine this with at least one Pirate NFT in order for that ship to undertake a voyage at any given moment in time.
The Ship NFT will be assigned with three attributes (Resilience, Fortune and Navigation) and the value of these attributes will vary depending on the Ship's rarity.
The attributes of the Ship will supplement the attributes of Pirates and can be selected to compensate for any areas of weakness.
Ship attributes will be upgradeable at a cost. Common Ships will be upgradable but will for example but will never be upgradable past an Epic Ship. An Epic ship will be upgradeable to Legendary Ship but no ships will be upgradeable to Mythic.
Ships will undertake damage during a voyage but are not capable of being fully destroyed. Ships will then need to be fully repaired (at a cost) before a next voyage can be undertaken.
Different Pirate Ranks may be added to a Ship to max 4 (Captain / QM / FM / etc) and only 1 of each rank, in order to bolster the overall attributes of the Ship being tested in the voyage.
Development Idea - you can either use your Pirate NFT or you can hire a temporary crew for the voyage (will be at a cost of $EIGHT)
Development Idea - Ships will be capable of being loaned out for a voyage with spoils to be shared with the ship owner
ARTEFACT NFTs
Artefacts may be minted as drops during the Phase 3 of the Project and/or will also be discoverable during voyages.
An Artefact will increase the overall attributes of your Pirate and Ship (Resilience, Fortune and Navigation) and therefore either reduce your risk on Voyages or increase your luck at discovering treasure.
Artefacts are supplementary and are not needed to undertake voyages or to participate in any other aspect of the Project.
PROGRESSION
The initial goal for Project participants will entail securing enough $EIGHT to upgrade the Pirate ship(s) as the Project starts to introduce more utility for the in-game currency.
A new pirate would experience how rough the seas can be if they were to take on legendary voyages before being fully equipped to do so (sufficient crew, upgraded ships, family crest and Kraken bonuses etc). As the game universe expands, Pirates can expect more skills, activities, quests and more ways to progress in the game.
GAMEFI
As a Project we are cognisant that it may only be a small part of the OTK community and even the wider Cardano community that are actually hardcore gamers. And so we are taking as many of the different player types into consideration in the ways in which it is envisaged that the game will eventually be explored and played. Some Examples:
Explorer - is a Pirate that goes on voyages with the aim of discovering treasure, earning pieces of eight and legendary artefacts (active gamers)
Privateer - is a Pirate who lies in wait to attack merchant ships or other Pirates to relieve them of their loot and artefacts (active gamers)
Ship Merchant - is a Pirate who specialises in the outfitting and trading of ships to time poor project Participants (passive gamers)
Artefact Merchant - is a Pirate who specialises in the trade of all the artefacts on the Black Market (passive gamers)
Market Maker - is a Pirate who creates the liquidity pools for the trade of in-game currencies $EIGHT and $MAPS (passive defi participants)
Fleet owner - is a Pirate of status who has a fleet of ships or multiple crews and who loans them out to other Pirate Captains for a share of the spoils (passive gamers)
PIRATE FAMILIES
Project Participants will be able to align themselves and declare allegiance with a specific Pirate family and each family will have their own specific traits, abilities advantages and disadvantages, that will supplement the various ways in which the game play may be carried out. Rock / Paper / Scissors mechanics.
